How much MRR are failed payments costing you?

Free calculator. Use your own numbers - the defaults are only examples.

MRR failing each month
$1,800
Lost today: per month / per year
$1,080 / $12,960
Extra recovered at your target: per month / per year
$360 / $4,320

The extra recovery each month is about 36x the founding plan ($10 a month). Simple monthly estimate: it ignores customers who stay for many more months once their card is fixed, so the real value is usually higher.

Stripe decline code decoder

Pick the code from a failed payment to see whether Stripe will retry it and what to tell the customer.

Stripe can retry this automatically.

What it means: The account didn't have enough money at the time of the charge.

What to do: Let Smart Retries try again, ideally after common paydays (1st, 15th, month end). Send a short, friendly email; no need to ask for a new card.

Selling to Indian customers? 4 rules that change dunning

  • Stripe doesn't retry India-issued cards

Stripe Billing skips automatic retries for cards issued in India, so a failed renewal from an Indian customer just stays unpaid unless you contact them.

  • 24-hour pre-debit notice on every mandate charge

Under RBI's e-mandate framework the customer's bank must notify them at least 24 hours before each recurring debit. You can't retry every few hours like a US card - plan fewer, well-timed attempts.

  • ₹15,000 limit without extra authentication

Recurring debits up to ₹15,000 go through without an extra OTP (₹1,00,000 for insurance premiums, mutual funds and credit card bills). Above that, the customer must authenticate each charge, so expect more failures on big annual plans.

  • Cancelled mandates need the customer

If a customer revokes a UPI AutoPay or card mandate, no retry can work. Send a WhatsApp message with a link to set up a new mandate.

Churnivo will run all of this for you: retries timed by decline reason, this email sequence branded as yours, WhatsApp nudges and a recovered-MRR dashboard.

Who it's for

  • "I'm on Stripe with $5k-$50k MRR and I see past_due invoices every week but never chase them."
  • "We sell to Indian customers on Razorpay and half our mandates fail or get cancelled quietly."
  • "Churn Buster and Churnkey look good but cost more than the revenue I'd recover."
  • "My Stripe dunning emails are the default ones and nobody updates their card."
  • Newsletter, course, community, app and membership businesses with monthly or annual plans

Why people use Churnivo

Every month some of your subscribers don't cancel - their card simply fails. Insufficient funds, an expired card, a bank that blocks a recurring charge. Baremetrics puts the average at around 9% of MRR at risk. Stripe retries some of these but sends generic emails, and it does not retry India-issued cards at all. Razorpay mandates follow RBI rules that a US-style dunning tool doesn't understand. Dedicated recovery tools usually charge a monthly subscription sized for companies far bigger than yours. Churnivo is being built for founders at $2k-$100k MRR: connect Stripe, Razorpay or Dodo once, and it retries at sensible times, emails a one-click card-update link, nudges on WhatsApp where your customers actually read messages, and shows you what it recovered.

  • ✓ Retry rules by decline reason: retry insufficient funds near payday, stop retrying hard declines like stolen_card and ask for a new card instead
  • ✓ Branded card-update emails with a one-click hosted update link, sent on a schedule you can edit
  • ✓ WhatsApp and SMS nudges for customers who ignore email - built for Indian subscribers
  • ✓ India-aware: works with Razorpay e-mandates and UPI AutoPay and respects RBI's 24-hour pre-debit notice rule
  • ✓ Card-expiry reminders before the charge fails, not after
  • ✓ A dashboard of failed, recovered and lost MRR by decline reason, so you know what is working
  • ✓ Free today on this page: leak calculator, Stripe decline code decoder and a copy-ready dunning email sequence

Includes: Stripe first, then Razorpay and Dodo · Up to $50k MRR · Email + WhatsApp nudges · Recovered MRR dashboard

Frequently asked questions

Is Churnivo live yet?

No. It is in pre-order and launching within 60 days. You can reserve a founding spot for ₹499 / $10, which is fully refundable any time before launch, or join the free waitlist. The leak calculator, decline code decoder and email templates on this page are free and work today.

What does the founding price include?

Your ₹499 / $10 reservation counts as your first month after launch. After that the founding plan stays at ₹499 / $10 a month for as long as you remain subscribed, covering up to $50k MRR, email and WhatsApp nudges, and the recovery dashboard.

Which billing systems will it work with?

Stripe Billing first, then Razorpay Subscriptions and Dodo Payments. If you are on a different platform, join the waitlist and tell us which one when we email you.

Stripe already has Smart Retries. Why would I need this?

Smart Retries is good at choosing when to retry, and you should keep it on. It does not stop the customer from forgetting to update an expired or replaced card, its emails are generic, it has no WhatsApp or SMS, and Stripe does not retry India-issued cards. Most recoverable failures need the customer to act, and that is what Churnivo's emails and nudges are for.

Will extra retries get my payments flagged?

Too many retries can. Stripe caps retryable charges at eight attempts and warns that issuers may treat excessive retries as suspicious. Churnivo works with your processor's retry schedule rather than stacking another one on top, and never retries hard declines such as stolen_card or lost_card - for those it asks the customer for a new card.

How does recovery work for Indian customers on e-mandates?

Under RBI's e-mandate framework the customer's bank must send a pre-debit notification at least 24 hours before each recurring charge, and debits above ₹15,000 need extra authentication (₹1,00,000 for insurance, mutual funds and credit card bills). So you can't retry Indian mandates every few hours like US cards. Churnivo plans retries within those rules through Razorpay and reaches the customer on WhatsApp to fix a cancelled or underfunded mandate.

How much revenue can I expect to recover?

It depends on your customers, price point and payment mix, so we don't promise a number. Use the calculator on this page with your own MRR and failure rate to see what each extra percentage point of recovery is worth to you.

Do you store card details?

No. Card updates happen on your payment provider's hosted page (for example Stripe's), so card numbers never touch Churnivo.

Can I use the email templates without buying?

Yes. Copy the sequence below into Stripe's customer emails, your email tool or your own code. Replace the merge fields like {first_name} and {update_link} with your own values.
